Huawei Releases Innovative Data Storage Solutions to Support Operators in Building Reliable Data Infrastructure

[China, Shanghai, June 29, 2023] During the 2023 MWC Shanghai, Huawei held a product solutions innovation practice event focused on data storage, releasing a series of innovations and practices for the field of data storage targeting operators. These innovations, such as container storage, generative AI storage, and OceanDisk intelligent disk arrays, are designed to help global operators construct reliable data infrastructure in the context of the “new applications, new data, new security” trends.

Dr. Zhou Yuefeng, the President of Huawei’s Data Storage Product Line, stated that operators are currently facing a series of challenges, including multi-cloud ecosystems, the explosion of generative AI, and data security threats. Huawei’s data storage solutions offer a range of innovative products and solutions to grow together with operators.

For new applications, accelerating the extraction of valuable data through data paradigms

Firstly, multi-cloud has become the new norm for operator data center deployments, with cloud-native applications being increasingly integrated into enterprise on-premises data centers, making high-performance, highly reliable container storage a necessity. Currently, more than 40 operators worldwide have chosen Huawei’s container storage solutions.

Secondly, generative AI has entered into operator application scenarios such as network operations, intelligent customer service, and B2B industries, leading to a new paradigm in data and storage architecture. Operators face challenges in large-scale model training with exponential parameter and training data growth, long data preprocessing cycles, and unstable training processes. Huawei’s generative AI storage solution improves training preprocessing efficiency through techniques such as checkpoint-based backups and recovery, on-the-fly processing of training data, and vectorized indexing. It supports training of massive models with trillions of parameters.

For new data, breaking through data gravity through data weaving

Firstly, to cope with the surge in massive data, cloud data centers mainly use server-integrated architectures with local disks, leading to resource wastage, inadequate performance reliability, and limited elastic expansion. Tengyun Cloud, in collaboration with Huawei, has introduced the OceanDisk intelligent disk array to support video, development testing, AI computing, and other services, reducing data center cabinet space and energy consumption by 40%.

Secondly, the growth in data scale brings forth a significant data gravity challenge, requiring the construction of intelligent data weaving capabilities to achieve a globally unified data view and scheduling across systems, regions, and clouds. In China Mobile, Huawei’s Global File System (GFS) has helped improve data scheduling efficiency by threefold, better supporting the value extraction of upper-layer applications.

For new security, building intrinsic storage security capabilities

Data security threats are transitioning from physical damage to human-caused attacks, and traditional data security systems struggle to meet the latest data security requirements. Huawei offers a ransomware protection solution, constructing the last line of data security defense through multilayer protection and intrinsic storage security capabilities. Currently, over 50 strategic customers worldwide have chosen Huawei’s ransomware protection solution.

Dr. Zhou Yuefeng emphasized that in the face of the trends of future new applications, new data, and new security, Huawei’s data storage will continue to collaborate with operator customers to explore the direction of IT infrastructure development, continuously launch innovative product solutions, match business development requirements, and support operator digital transformation.

The 2023 MWC Shanghai is held from June 28 to June 30 in Shanghai, China. Huawei’s exhibition area is located at Hall N1, E10 and E50, Shanghai New International Expo Center (SNIEC). Huawei is actively engaging with global operators, industry elites, opinion leaders, and others to deeply discuss hot topics like accelerating 5G prosperity, moving towards the 5.5G era, and digital transformation. The 5.5G era will bring new commercial value to scenarios involving human connection, IoT, V2X, etc., propelling a wide range of industries towards a comprehensive intelligent world.
